How to reduce log size of SEP 12

The log file of Symantec Endpoint Protection can grow so large it can consume a whole disk space. Unless it is truncated, and regularly truncated.

For Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 RU1 MP1, the following are the step to manually truncate the transaction log.

  1. Open the SEP Manager console.
  2. On the console, click Admin, then click Servers.
  3. Under Servers, click the database server (e.g., “localhost”).

  4. Under Tasks, click “Truncate Transaction Log Now”.
  5. A Truncate Database Transaction Log window will pop out. Click Run.

  6. Wait for the task execution report. You can also monitor the activity log at the bottom for progress.

    Click Close when done.

  7. Under Tasks, click “Rebuild Indexes Now”.
  8. A Rebuild Indexes window will pop out. Click Run.

Now that the SEP log has been reduced to a manageable size, we have to make sure it stays manageable. We can schedule regular log truncation and rebuild indexes jobs for this.

  1. Open SEP Manager console.
  2. On the console, click Admin, then click Servers.
  3. Under Servers, click the database server (e.g., “localhost”).
  4. Under Tasks, click “Edit Database Properties”. The Database Properties for [database name] will appear.

  5. On the General tab, click to check both the “Truncate the database transaction logs” and the “Rebuild Indexes”.

  6. Click the Schedule Task buttons and set a schedule for each job.

  7. Click OK when finished.
